Understanding your data: from collection to effective analytics
12th June 2018 at 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
CityLABS is proud to present the first Data Workshop, which will be led by The Open University team. The workshop is targeted at SMEs and will showcase solutions for business data analytics.
The workshop is open to any SME that has an interest in developing a better understanding of data-driven applications and services.
A full day set of activities will be organised around different aspects of the development process (design, visualisation, data processing and privacy issues) and will include both presentations and practical sessions with real-world examples.
The CityLABS Technical Support Team will demonstrate how to develop data-powered applications and services building on cutting-edge data analytics techniques involving streaming, open, and big data.
The workshop will include both lectures and hands-on sessions, exposing the participants to a number of different approaches and allowing them to reflect on how these can be applied to their specific use cases.

08:30 – 09:00 – Registration and Intro
09:00 – 10:30 – Stream data and IoT : from capturing sensor data to their visualisation
In this session we will showcase technologies for acquiring, modeling and managing big data streamed by sensors and IoT devices.
10:30 – 12:00 – Working with large tables: Big Data processing and analytics
Introducing the basic principles of working with large tables. This hands-on session will show attendees how to load, process, and query large data tables using the Hadoop stack for tabular data (Hue, PIG and HIVE).
12:00 – 13:30 – Lunch
13:30 – 14:00 – “Datawareness” – big data and privacy challenges
In this session we will explore privacy concerns emerging from the process of big data processing and will discuss the key principles and regulations from the newly implemented European regulation on privacy (EUGDPR).
14:00 – 15:30 – Revealing insights with Data Science techniques
In this session we will explain how to use basic Machine Learning techniques (regression, classification, clustering) to reveal hidden patterns in data.
15:30 – 16:00 – Wrap-up
